21 runners have been included in nominations for Saturday’s Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben Racecourse, highlighted by the inclusion of several leading three-year-old contenders.
Time For War ran a close second in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1300m) on the Sunshine Coast last weekend and looks likely for a one week back-up after being included in 2015 Fred Best Classic nominations.
Posting three wins and as many minors through eleven career starts so far, Time For War stamped his claims as one to watch over a standout two-year-old campaign, highlighted by successes in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) and a fourth place finish in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
Having placed second in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) a fortnight prior to his Glasshouse Handicap triumph, trainer Stuart Kendrick will allow Wednesday’s final field and barrier draw dictate a Fred Best Classic berth for Time For War.
Sarajevo has returned to competitive form this time and is a leading chance for success in the 2015 Fred Best Classic.
Having contested seven races for two wins and a minor, Sarajevo ended a strong early spring campaign a credible sixth in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m); returning this year for success in the TAB Plate Multi BM72 (1200m) on January 31st.
Having beaten just one runner home in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) a fortnight later, trainer John O’Shea’s decision to freshen-up the son of Lonhro paid off a fortnight ago when he ran on for a close second in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1200m).
The local contingent looks likely to be well represented at Doomben on Saturday after both Traveston Girl and Miss Cover Girl were included in 2015 Fred Best Classic nominations.
A standout performer for trainer Tony Gollan over spring, Traveston Girl finished fourth in each of the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) and Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) before running a close second in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 11th.
Having finished third in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) and Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) this time, the daughter of Flying Spur will look to take up the pace early on Saturday.
Finishing outside the first three only three times in 12 career starts, Miss Cover Girl has found typically great form this time and is primed for a return to the winner’s circle in the 2015 Fred Best Classic.
Taking out a Doomben minor over 1200m first-up on February 28th, the Monashee Mountain filly failed to make an impact when fifth in a Gold Coast Sprint over 1400m on March 14th, but responded with a career-best victory to date in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships.
The 2015 Fred Best Classic final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
