While underlining the 2016 Fred Best Classic (1350m) as the hopeful option, trainer Bryce Heys has revealed he will saddle Spieth in a minor Rosehill sprint on Saturday should the classy three-year-old miss the field for the Group 3 race at Doomben.
Spieth clearly required a run when he returned for tenth in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on Day 2 of The Championships, and had clearly taken benefit from the run when delivering a notable field a resounding five length defeat in the Illawarra Turf Club Handicap (1200m) on May 3rd.
Understandably pleased with the condition of the Thorn Park colt, Heys told AAP he will accept a position in the Fred Best Classic field, but is unsure he will make the cut should a capacity number of runners declare their intentions in Brisbane.
“At this stage I’ll probably just accept in the Fred Best Classic and here in Sydney,” Heys said.
“Going on the ballot for the Fred Best he’s probably going to be an emergency and if that’s the case he’ll probably run at Rosehill.
“But we’ll see what that brings tomorrow morning.”
Heys believes the three-year-old’s recent triumph suggests he will be tough to beat in his next assignment, but revealed he was confident Spieth was always going to be dominant.
“I don’t know that we necessarily learnt anything but it was more about the horse having a day out and getting things right,” he said.
“He couldn’t have been any more impression, however I don’t know that it told us much about whether he is good enough to step up in grade.”
Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Spieth immediately stamped himself as one to watch when finishing second to Secret Agenda in the Grand Hotel Frankston BM70 (1200m) in September; progressing to success in the Burdens Plumbtec Maiden (1200m) before ending his maiden campaign a credible seventh in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).
The 2016 Fred Best Classic field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, today (Wednesday, 18 May 2016).
